i was inspired to make this piece when staring into the bottom of my beer one day, the bubbles coming up from the widget were mesmerising and i became absorbed in the moment. the bubbles transfixed me and i was reminded of the feeling of watching a candle flicker. i began to think about the significance of lighting a candle for someone, and how i could recreate those feelings away from a religious setting.
in the centre of nottingham two hundred tiny glass votives will glimmer in the dark. you will be encouraged to interact with this piece of art by filling one of the glasses with the sparkling water provided. these individual acts energise the artwork, bringing it to life as the sparkling water effervesces from the word ‘you’ etched on the bottom of each votive.
the subtle nature of ‘you’ imbues a feeling of tranquility and stillness, encouraging a state of mutual harmony between the people gathered in the space. it is not founded on faith or culture but on universal human emotions.
the ritualistic nature enables an expression of transcendence and connection with others, mimicking the act of lighting a candle it echoes the symbolism of healing the past and bringing hope for the future. the participants are taking part in a type of vigil, entering into a period of watchful attention where they can focus their attention on hope and purpose.
as each individual partakes in the action of filling a votive and watching the bubbles emit from the words ‘you’ they are stimulated to focus their thoughts on themselves and their significant others, a brief moment when they are able to reflect on the effect they can have on others and that others can have on them.
‘you’ is about the simplicity of a gesture and the power of an action; the intention of the doing and the focus of the being.
